Stephen Frears Frontrunner to Direct Freddie Mercury. Stephen Frears, the Oscar nominated director of The Queen (2006), has emerged as an early frontrunner to direct GK Films’ untitled biopic about Freddie Mercury, lead singer of the rock band Queen. Sacha Baron Cohen (The Dictator, Hugo) is attached to play Mercury. Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon) wrote the latest draft of the script about the late singer/songwriter’s life. Producers have already landed music rights to several of Queen’s biggest hits. The movie will focus on the years leading up to Queen’s appearance at the Live Aid concert in 1985. See More

India Eisley Cast as Young Angelina Jolie in Maleficent. The Secret Life of the American Teenager star India Eisley is joining the cast of Maleficent, Disney’s live-action retelling of the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale starring Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning. Eisley (Underworld: Awakening) will play a younger version of Angelina Jolie’s villainous character Maleficent in the opening act, which establishes what led her to curse Princess Aurora (Fanning). The story centers on the evil fairy Maleficent, who curses the young Princess Aurora, proclaiming that before the sun sets on her 16th birthday, she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and fall asleep from which she can only be awakened by true love’s kiss. Rebecca Hall Joins Iron Man 3. The Town star Rebecca Hall is in talks to join the cast of Disney/Marvel’s superhero sequel Iron Man 3, being directed by Shane Black. Hall would play a scientist who helps to create a nanotechnology that winds up being sold to terrorists. The role was originally intended for Jessica Chastain but she dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. The third installment stars Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow with new editions Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce and Andy Lau. The company will release the film under its distribution labels IFC Films and Sundance Selects this fall.
