Star Trek 2 Begins Production. Director J.J. Abrams has begun principal photography on the next Star Trek movie. The film will be released on May 17, 2013 in 3D. Returning to their posts on the Enterprise are John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Anton Yelchin. They are joined by new cast members Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller. “Star Trek 2″ will tell the story of the young crew’s next voyage on board the most advanced starship ever created: the U.S.S. Enterprise. Kirk and Spock must find a way to stop a new villain whose mission of vengeance threatens all of mankind.

Plot Details

January 5, 2012 – Benedict Cumberbatch Joins Star Trek 2. Director J.J. Abrams has cast British actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Noel Clarke in Paramount’s upcoming Star Trek sequel. Cumberbatch (War Horse, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) will reportedly play a villain and Clarke (Doctor Who) will play a family man with a wife and young daughter. (THR, Variety)

December 5, 2011 – Peter Weller Beams Up, Benicio Del Toro Drops Out of Star Trek Sequel. Director J.J. Abrams has cast RoboCop’s Peter Weller in Paramount’s upcoming Star Trek sequel. Weller is no stranger to the Trek universe, he appeared in two episodes of the prequel TV series ‘Star Trek: Enterprise’. Negotiations between Paramount and actor Benicio Del Toro have apparently fallen through. Del Toro was in talks to play the sequel’s new villain. (Variety, Vulture)

November 30, 2011 – Alice Eve Joins Star Trek 2. Director J.J. Abrams’ has chosen British-born actress Alice Eve to join the second installment of Paramount’s rebooted Star Trek franchise. Eve (The Raven, She’s Out of My League) will be playing a character that’s believed to be new to the canon. (Variety)

November 5, 2011 – Benicio Del Toro Wanted for ‘Star Trek 2′. Benicio Del Toro is reportedly in talks with director J.J. Abrams for the villain role in Paramount’s sequel to ‘Star Trek’ (2009). Del Toro is expected to be offered the part, possibly before the end of the weekend. (Variety)

September 14, 2011 – J.J. Abrams to Direct ‘Star Trek 2′. ‘Super 8′ director J.J. Abrams (‘Super 8′) has committed to shooting ‘Star Trek 2′, the follow-up to his successful ‘Star Trek’ film franchise reboot. Pre-production is reportedly underway, the script will be done by month’s end and Abrams will start shooting this winter. (Vulture)
