DC and Marvel are both releasing "Captain Marvel" movies in 2019. How did this happen? Recently, Marvel Studios debuted the first official photos of Brie Larson as Captain Marvel. The film co-stars Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, Samuel L. Jackson, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, and Lashana Lynch.

In the film, Larson plays Carol Danvers a flawed Air Force pilot with alien powers who becomes the superhero "Captain Marvel." Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel is set for release on March 8, 2019.

Now you may be wondering isn't there another "Captain Marvel" movie coming out in 2019?

Newline Cinema will be releasing DC's Shazam (aka Captain Marvel) a month later on April 5, 2019. The film stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer and Mark Strong.

Now, you may be wondering how to characters that have been around for a very long time, that have the same name and have a movie coming out at the same time. To add more confusion, both films co-star Djimon Hounsou. Is this a coincidence? The answer is Yes and No.

Captain Marvel/Shazam first appeared in Whiz Comics (owned by publisher Fawcett Comics) in 1940 and quickly became the most popular superhero of the 1940s outselling Superman.

That was until DC Comics sued Fawcett Comics and the small comic book company ceased publishing Captain Marvel. In the 1970s DC licensed the rights to Captain Marvel and by the 1990s DC acquired all rights.

But, due to the trademark conflicts over the years, in the late sixties Marvel gained the trademark "Captain Marvel" and DC decided to change his the title of the "Captain Marvel" comic books to "Shazam!", which is an acronym for Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury. However, they still called the character "Captain Marvel" inside the pages.

In order for Marvel to retain the trademark, they had to use the name "Captain Marvel" at least every two years. That's how and why the popular character Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers) was renamed "Captain Marvel" in 2012.
