TriStar Pictures has acquired worldwide distribution rights to Danny Boyle’s sequel Trainspotting 2, based on characters originally created by author Irvine Welsh. The sequel will reunite director Danny Boyle with screenwriter John Hodge and all of the principal cast of the 1996 film.

It’s been 20 years since we met the characters Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie in "Trainspotting" (1996). The sequel will explore what happened to them and to us in the intervening years.
Producers on "Trainspotting 2" are Andrew Macdonald, Danny Boyle, Christian Colson, and Bernie Bellew through Figment Films, Decibel Films, and Cloud Eight Films. Film4 is also a production entity. Shooting will begin in late spring 2016 with plans for the film to be released in 2017 to mark the 21st birthday of the original film.
